Deciding on a format and style
Early on, I decided that I wanted at least one piece of art to be included with every chapter of the book. I was inspired by books like Rework and Steal Like an Artist, whose concepts feel richer and easier to understand, remember, and reference because of the illustrations in each chapter. I also felt that in this time in which AI is starting to become such a constant in our lives, real illustrations would help ground the book more and make it feel more humanistic.
Like Rework and Steal Like an Artist, I wanted to make each chapter as bite-sized as possible, while providing real, tactical advice that people could pick up and implement. As I have gotten older, I have also come to realize that I likely have undiagnosed ADD (notice the absence of the H; there is nothing about me that is hyperactive). I have found that this format of shorter chapters with illustrations helps me to focus on the concepts and understand them. I have also grown frustrated with business books that are big and self-promotion and scant on details. I would need to include tools that people could pick up immediately and use.
